Are my co-workers racist?

It really troubles me that racism is still so strong in America. No matter how much it gets sugar coated, it never seems to get any better. Today, I over heard my co-workers talking about this picture...the responses were unbelievable. I can’t believe that I’m working amongst so many ignorant people. They were asked on several occasions to stop the conversation, but ignored the request and continued to voice their opinions. I mean don’t get me wrong, we all have some racist ways, but is it necessary to bring that into the work place? I don’t want to seem overly sensitive to the comments, but why does it seem like white people get to say whatever they want whenever they want, and we, be it Blacks, Chinese, Jews, Indians, anyone other race than whites, have to act like we don’t hear it, or like it doesn’t bother us? We would never get away with making those comments and especially in the work place. I don’t care what anyone says, segregation still exist, it’s just managed in different ways. Just recently Jeezy made a song called “My President is Black”, and they made a huge deal out of it, but yet they can walk around and disrespect us to our face and put demeaning racist pictures in a national newspaper and say “oh we didn’t mean anything by it, you all are just making an issue out of nothing”. Does anyone else see anything wrong with this or am I being overly sensitive?

What exactly did the co-workers say?

I don't remember exactly what was said, but what I do remember hearing was I don't see anything wrong with them using a monkey for this situation. Pretty much they were saying Obama is a monkey. They were very distrub at the fact that he even became our president! Everyday some kind of remark is made and down played....

I deal with these Co-workers on a daily work basis. How is one suppose to keep quite when comments are repeatedly made without consideration of their fellow Co-workers who are a different race? This is totally wrong and now- I am considering a follow-up with the HR Dept. What do you think?

I do not want to sound like I am Al Sharpton or anything like that. I do not work in your organization but I understand what you are talking about. I have spoken to members of your organization before but my first question was. Why are you offended when you allowed this type of behavior to manifest for so long.. When minorities allow situations to manifest then it will present an issue when the situation. It is my understanding that these individuals have made a conscious effort to belittle the minorities that within this organization. I am a minority male and totally understand my heritage but we as minorities have been accustomed to allow certain behaviors from the majority to be overlooked (ie. Speaking to the minorities in let’s say Ebonics) I guess you minorities think that was funny or cute. HR is there for a reason. Regardless of how much so called revenue that individual has brought into the organization does not excuse them from follow the ORGANIZATIONAL POLICIES. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW. This type of behavior should have been address to this individual(s) prior to this recent occurrence. But minorities R WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WER ignorant fools too scared to address the situation before it reaches its boiling point. The so call comment about the monkey seems like it was the tip of the iceberg. You ALL should have follow the organizational policies before this situation escalated to the point where jerry curl juice and sun tan lotion is about to fly around the office. The appropriate way to handle these types of people is to address the situation in front of witnesses. If that does not correct their behavior then you have no other choice but to report it to their direct supervisor and HR at the same time. More to come later.

Ugh... it seems perfectly natural to be offended. I am really shocked at all the racist shit I've been hearing from co-workers since the election. Currently, I am not even living in the country, and am totally shocked that my co-workers, who teach English as a second language, are just as bad as my co-workers in the States were! I don't know what to do, either. Last night, over dinner, someone was giving this speech about why white people should be allowed to say the n word. I gasped, and everyone looked at me like I was an asshole. Then, someone was talking about "wetbacks" and I said, "What, you don't have any Hispanic people where you come from?" The guy just made a smart-ass remark. It bothers me that because we're all white, somehow it's assumed that we're all racist rednecks and it's ok to talk like that. I don't know what else to do but avoid them outside of work. Blegh. Let me know what you ended up doing, ok? And if you have any advice for me, I would appreciate it, too.
